About the Event
Iowa is home to remarkable reptiles and amphibians like gray treefrogs, northern leopard frogs, chorus frogs, painted turtles, snapping turtles, garter snakes, fox snakes, brown snakes, and even the striking five-lined skink. These creatures help control pests, balance ecosystems, and signal the health of our land—yet they often go unnoticed.
During this hands-on class, you’ll learn how to make your yard, patio, or neighborhood green space more welcoming to these wild neighbors.
During the first half of the class you will:
Meet Iowa’s Common Species: Enjoy live reptiles and amphibians up close, ask questions, and replace myths with understanding.
Understand Their Needs: Explore simple habitat elements like shallow water, native plants, sunning spots, leaf litter, and undisturbed shelter.
In the second half you will:

This fee is for people with expendable income. This option allows you to assist others in attending our classes by “paying it forward” for those who have less access to opportunities.

This fee is for people who have the resources they need to make ends meet and can attend our classes at full cost.

This fee is for people who are working hard to make ends meet on low wages and have less access to resources and opportunities.

This option is for people who have low access to resources. Examples include those with income below the poverty line, people living with mental and physical health concerns, and people experiencing insecurity in basic needs attainment.
